Prehistoric petroglyphs, sandstone quarry, rock formations
A great site for exploring historic rock-carvings (petroglyphs) in Qatar. The carvings depict boats, fish, scorpions and round holes that resemble cup-holders. They are believed by some to have been used for old board-games. However there is no compelling evidence for that theory. Neither the function, nor the age of the rock-carvings is known and disputed by researchers. It is known however, that the sand-stone in the area has been quarried for use in construction. In addition to the petroglyphs you will see markings of the tools to break the boulders apart for use in construction.
Important Note: The whole area is under protection. Please stay on the clear paths and do not touch the petroglyphs. Thus these rare Qatari archeological features will be preserved for future generations. It is strictly forbidden to take anything from the area. Take only pictures and leave only foot-prints. Thank you!
